Can Literacy Make You a Better Human or Just Better at Grammar?
My family believes in two things strongly: Sunday rice and education. And if you try to take either from us, you're declaring war. Growing up, I heard my mom say countless times, “No matter what, you must go to school.” While my dad would say, "Education is a key given to you; use the key as you like."
I have heard many people say the phrase "School na scam," but these same people saying these words are in school and none of them are dropping out. Surprising, right?
Now, whether that was wisdom or fear of community embarrassment, I don’t know. But I do know this: in our house, if you used “was” where “were” was supposed to be, everyone would pause mid-sentence to look at you like you had just insulted the ancestors. And my little sister, who went to a Montessori school, would always be there to correct your English for you. I disliked her for this then, but it helped me improve myself.
But let's ask this question: does literacy really make someone better? Does knowing how to read, write, and quote dictionary definitions mean you're automatically a great human being? Because, honestly, I’ve met some “very educated” people who wouldn't borrow you salt or say sorry even if your leg broke in front of them. I have seen university students commit atrocities in the name of religion, and I think to myself, "They are meant to be educated and know better so what's wrong?"
Still, there's no denying the power of being literate, not just in the academic sense, but in the sense of understanding people, systems, rules, and how not to accidentally forward your boss a meme meant for your cousin. That one requires a different level of literacy entirely.
Let's talk about this topic in a broader and simpler way. I will be answering some questions to the best of my knowledge, so this is me welcoming you to my blog and I hope you learn something from me. Let's go.
So the question remains: does literacy help build better people, better families, and better neighbors? Or is it just one piece of a very big, complicated puzzle?
One thing about being learned is that you tend to understand things easily and on a deeper level. It makes being easily deceived not possible and that alone is a fact for a better person. The truth is that being literate has a huge advantage over being illiterate. There are things that other people wouldn't understand that a learned person would and provide a solution for. For a parent to train a child to be a literate person and love to help that child grow, the parent has to be a learned parent because they would have so much to help give to their child, and that can create a lasting memory for that child.
But does being learned automatically make you a good person? The answer is no. We are human and our nature can never be predicted. I would say for a fact that being learned makes a person a bit normal and would make them think things through before making any decision, unlike an unlearned person who would make decisions based on emotions and what they see. Meanwhile, looks can be deceiving.
In conclusion, being learned doesn't make a person a good person but I believe it does help people be less inclined to hurt their fellows or even make mistakes that will place everyone else at risk because they are open-minded and this is deeper than an uneducated person. Some people might not agree with me, but the one thing that has crumbled many nations is lack of knowledge, and how will you claim to be knowledgeable if you are not educated, learned, or literate? Think about this.

It's the photo for me! God when!!🤲
Illiterate People, no doubt act based on emotions and what they feel from their environment. The literate ones that lack good/human home training do things they feel is right always especially adopting in the western world habit
Yeah
That’s true
Some people that are literate and still act wicked or in horrible way are just that way , it wasn’t education that made them like that, they were brought up wrongly
Literacy is really advantageous but it cannot change the heart of man and the Bible says that the heart of man I s desperately wicked.
Thank you, people who are literate know how to think better and won’t be easily use for political propaganda but you see the illiterate, it’s so easy to use them because they know nothing and when one act rashly even while having education, I’ll just blame it on the person persona
It’s just the way they are
Even if they are illiterate, they would be the same or worse
Yeah
I was given education too, I have seen educated people that behave in such a way that makes one question of such persons true exposure. Education seriously helps one under things better especially for those who want to. Thank you so much for reading
Yeah, you made a good point here and it seems you understood what I was saying
Thanks for the comment
I'm hoping I won't write an epistle on this. Being literate is not proportional to being educated. Let me clarify. Literacy is more of reading and writing while education is wholesome- it affects the entire being. This is why we oftentimes call some people uneducated literates or educated illiterates.
Going to school makes you literate and getting educated somehow but being educated is totally up to an individual. We have social education, mental education, religious/spiritual education and so on.
Hence, one can be so sound with grammar, vocabularies and oral English but still dull in many areas. That's why we have academic giants who still commit social blunders so to say. Going to school or being in school opens you up to endless education if you can grab the opportunity.
This is looking like an epistle to Philemon already.
I rest my case
I get you but your point of being a literate isn’t proportional to being educated, I believe all literate people are educated
Like you said, being literate has to do with being able to read and understand language which makes communication better even tho there are blunders but don’t you think bring a literate is the foundation of being an educated person in any area, either street, or other field, in as much the person is literate, they won’t find it difficult to cope in some dire situations like an illerate would. Most time, an illiterate would either worsen the situation or put people in danger
My guy, the first line of this post got me rolling. Sunday rice as how now?😂😂
I agree with you, Fash. Being learned doesn't make you a good person, but it goes a long way.
Yes na, we don’t miss Sunday afternoon rice, it’s a culture now🤣🤣🤣
And yeah, it goes a long way, education
Being literate is a general term used for anyone that can read and write but it doesn't necessarily make anyone all knowing. Which means despite being educated and considered an illiterate there will still be some areas we lack proper the understanding of. I'm sure you have heard of the term "educated illiterates" which is used to refer to set of people that passes through the formal education structure and yet can't apply their knowledge practically to real life issues. Which proves that being educated does not translate to being literate, I mean not fully.
Not getting deceived easily does not necessarily make a person, a better person. It means the person is strong-willed.
Saying being learned helps people to be less inclined to hurt others is impractical because we humans can choose which path is more suitable for the usage of our knowledge either good or bad, so being learned only enhances the chosen path
Ok, I understand you but I don’t agree with your point of saying being educated doesnt translate to being literate. So you know you have to be a literate, (Someone who can read and write) before you can classify yourself as someone who is educated.
Now there are many areas of education but having being a literate gives you an edge to be able to understand all this area. The reason why people are called educated illiterate is because that field where they find themselves, they can’t apply their knowledge.
You as an educated engineer, can you apply your knowledge in the operating room in an hospital? The answer is No, but put you’re a literate but not educated in that field, that doesn’t mean, if you see a manual to help that situation became stable before the right person comes, you won’t be able to do it. You’ll definitely be able to do it since it’s the way you got educated in your field other people are (through reading and understanding)
Now imagine, there is a dire situation and there is a manual to help you get out of a cold room, and you’re to pick someone to help. Both are not educated in that field to help you but there is a manual, one is literate and other one an illiterate, which one will you pick ?
Now, the truth is that, being a literate helps you less inclined to hurt others is a fact. Just that human will be humans and we have seen many case where atrocities are committed like vandalism of government property when there is a protest and all, even robbery just like the time of Covid-19
Most of the people caught doing this are illiterate that doesnt know better but if a person is well educated
Before any act will be committed, they would think twice about it and try to know if there will be a problem later in the nearest future
If there would be, they are likely not to go with it unless they are in a dire situation and they allow their human emotions take over.
I’m not saying a educated person are good but I said it make them less (remember less) inclined to do something bad
