Liberty Square in Budapest has an important place in Hungarian history. before the revolution in 1848 there was a prison where the square lies now. at the time there was a separatist movement that sought independence from Austria and established a constitution. Lajos Batthyány became the first democratically elected prime minister of Hungary but was executed at the prison after the revolution was quelled.

in contrast today there are various monuments in the square, including among others one to the Soviet liberation from nazi Germany in world war 2, another of US president Ronald Reagan and more recently George H W Bush. it's a peculiar place with a complex history but this shadow seems oblivious to all the symbolism surrounding it
