𝕏 cannot read messages. Private keys are backed up to hardware security modules (HSMs) to make recovering message history on new devices frictionless. The HSMs were initialized in a published key ceremony

Keys can only be recovered from the HSMs by entering the correct PIN. The number of allowed PIN guesses is 20 by default (verifiable via the key fetch response and immutable after registration); after that the keys self-destruct, so no one at 𝕏 can reliably brute force the PIN to recover keys

𝕏 Chat is continuously being improved to increase security without harming the user experience. Its goal is to be the communication system for Earth, with privacy and usability as core principles. End-to-end encrypted messages are offered, with no ad hooks and no dependency on AWS like other messaging services. Enhanced privacy features such as opt-in self-custody and forward secrecy are on the roadmap
