I thought I had already shared something about it, but to my surprise, I hadn’t written anything until now—even though this anime is one of my favorites! The reason I want to talk about it is simple: it has a great story, high-quality animation, and a manga that is still ongoing, which means we have many more seasons of Kaiju No. 8 to enjoy.

For those who haven’t watched it yet, here’s a brief synopsis without major spoilers.

This anime tells the story of Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man who dreams of joining the Defense Forces against the Kaiju. However, his age is an obstacle since he is at the limit for taking the entrance exams. Unlike typical shonen protagonists, Kafka is not a prodigy or an athlete (he’s actually quite chubby, lol), making his journey even more challenging. But his determination is unwavering because he has two strong reasons for wanting to join the organization: one is to save humanity, and the other… well, you’ll have to find out for yourselves.

His life takes an unexpected turn when, after a day of working as a Kaiju corpse cleaner, he has an accident alongside a colleague who encourages him to take the exam one last time. What happens in the hospital is, at first, pretty disgusting, but it becomes the turning point that changes his fate and gives him a new opportunity to achieve his dream.

With this premise, you might think that Kaiju No. 8 is just another shonen anime. It does have some typical elements of the genre, but it also introduces fresh ideas that set it apart from the rest. The author saw an opportunity among so many generic stories and created something unique and appealing. Kafka is not your typical “pretty boy” protagonist (I don’t even know how to translate princeso into English, haha) or the classic hero who wants to save everyone just because. He is a character with more depth, a more realistic personality, and strong motivations that break the traditional shonen mold.

For me, this anime has great potential. I’m almost caught up with the manga (which I’ll talk about another time, though that discussion might include spoilers), and so far, I can say the story has a smooth development with no unnecessary filler. One of its strongest points is character growth, especially Kafka’s. He doesn’t just evolve as a fighter but also as a leader and companion. His impact on the team is remarkable—not as a lone hero but as someone who helps others unlock their potential. When his comrades can’t go on, he’s there to support them and, if necessary, save them.

Besides the story and characters, the animation deserves special recognition. From the first trailers, it was clear that the studio put a lot of effort into delivering outstanding visual quality. The action scenes are incredibly well done, and the Kaiju designs effectively convey a constant sense of threat. Every battle is a visual spectacle that maintains tension and emotional impact.

As for the manga, it keeps a solid pace and continues to explore the mythology behind the Kaiju, revealing more details about their origins and the true nature of Kafka’s power. This allows the story to evolve consistently, without falling into monotony or repetitive plots.

If you haven’t given Kaiju No. 8 a chance yet, I highly recommend it! It’s a fresh take on the shonen genre, featuring an unconventional protagonist and an engaging story from the very first episode. And for those already watching or reading the manga, what do you think of it so far?

Hola chicos y chicas de esta gran comunidad, ya por la portada y el título saben de qué anime/manga voy a hablar. Pensé que ya les había comentado algo sobre él, pero para mi sorpresa, no había escrito nada hasta ahora, y eso que este anime está entre mis favoritos. El motivo por el cual les voy a hablar es simple, cuenta con una muy buena historia, una animación de calidad y un manga que sigue en emisión, lo que significa que tenemos muchas temporadas de "Kaiju No. 8" para rato.

Para quienes aún no han visto esta obra, les daré una pequeña sinopsis sin spoilers importantes.

Este anime nos cuenta la historia de Kafka Hibino, un hombre de 32 años que sueña con entrar a las Fuerzas de Defensa contra los Kaiju. Sin embargo, su edad representa un obstáculo, ya que está en el límite permitido para presentar los exámenes de ingreso. A diferencia de los protagonistas típicos del género shonen, Kafka no es un prodigio ni un atleta (ta bien gordo xD), lo que hace que su camino sea aún más complicado. Pero su determinación es inquebrantable, ya que tiene dos motivos fundamentales para querer unirse a la organización: uno es salvar a la humanidad y el otro... bueno, eso lo descubrirán ustedes mismos.

Su vida da un giro inesperado cuando, tras un día de trabajo como limpiador de restos de Kaiyu, sufre un accidente junto a un compañero quien es el que lo motiva a tomar el último examen. Lo que ocurre en el hospital es, en un principio, asqueroso, pero se convierte en el evento que cambiará su destino y le dará una nueva oportunidad para alcanzar su sueño.

Con esta premisa, es fácil pensar que "Kaiju No. 8" es solo otro shonen más. Tiene algunos elementos típicos del género, sí, pero también introduce aspectos innovadores que lo diferencian del resto. Su autor supo ver un espacio entre tantas historias genéricas y ofrecer algo llamativo. Kafka no es el típico protagonista "princeso" (no sé cómo se traduce eso al inglés, jaja) ni el héroe que quiere salvar a todos porque sí. Es un personaje con más matices, con una personalidad más realista y con motivaciones profundas que rompen con el molde clásico del género.

Para mí, este anime tiene un gran potencial. Voy casi al día con el manga (del cual les hablaré en otra ocasión, aunque ahí sí puede haber spoilers) y, por ahora, puedo decir que la historia sigue un desarrollo fluido, sin relleno innecesario. Uno de sus puntos fuertes es el crecimiento de los personajes, en especial el de Kafka, quien no solo evoluciona como guerrero, sino también como líder y compañero. Su impacto en el equipo es notable, ya que no es el tipo de protagonista que brilla en solitario, sino alguien que ayuda a los demás a potenciar sus fortalezas. Cuando sus compañeros no pueden más, él está ahí para apoyarlos y, si es necesario, salvarlos.

Además de la historia y los personajes, la animación es un elemento que merece reconocimiento. Desde los primeros avances, se pudo notar el esfuerzo del estudio por ofrecer una calidad visual impresionante. Las escenas de acción están más que bien, los diseños de monstruos transmiten la sensación de amenaza constante. Cada batalla es un espectáculo visual que logra mantener la tensión y el impacto emocional.

El manga, por su parte, mantiene un ritmo sólido y sigue explorando la mitología detrás de los Kaiju, ofreciendo cada vez más detalles sobre su origen y la verdadera naturaleza del poder que ha adquirido Kafka. Esto permite que la historia evolucione de manera constante, sin caer en la monotonía ni en el reciclaje de tramas.

Si aún no le han dado una oportunidad a "Kaiju No. 8", se los recomiendo totalmente. Es un anime con una propuesta fresca dentro del shonen, con un protagonista atípico y una historia que engancha desde el primer episodio.
