The aliens were trying to attack earth, but they were confused. They had enough fuel to travel to earth from their planet, but they did not know where to park their spacecraft and recharge it.

It required a different kind of fuel, which was not available on earth, and it required fueling immediately after firing. So, they were confused whether to go to earth or not.

This is why they tried to convince themselves, but they had to wait another century. And they decided to go for it.
