Detoxicated
The mind is a complicated and funny entity. It is the connection between the physical and the supernatural and also the studio where the best and most uplifting thoughts and plans are molded.
But just like every other thing in the universe operating on a yin and yang basis with opposing forces, it is also the temple of destructive thoughts.
I was in my adolescent years with a rebellious attitude, playing around with my schoolmates and play buddies. With a mind whirring with questions about the world unfolding before, curiosity began to creep in.
We spent hours touring each other's houses to watch the latest movies we could lay our hands on. From fighting scenes to crime scenes, indecency and violence to promiscuity and betrayal, our minds were subconsciously sifting in vices and raising our curiosity levels to unprecedented levels.
It wasn't long before we began rolling up leaves and papers just to get what it feels like to smoke. From leaves to saving our school transport fares for real cigars and alcohol, we were getting neck deep into the waters flowing with destructive milk.
It felt good and we managed to keep our little affair secret, away from the prying eyes of our parents and senior siblings.
As long as we were not getting addicted, but only served our curious mind while convincing ourselves that we were just being "big boys", we kept going.
From cigars we wanted to feel what cannabis tasted and felt like since everyone was making a big fuss about its effects.
It was all a roller-coaster for some time and we kept exploring different types of intoxicating elements and even got creative with some, but then I got a job after school and began to fall behind.
I couldn't go for movie time outs, I couldn't join them in training, I would even miss our little secret hangouts. I felt like I was being left behind in our little adventure of juvenile curiosity.
All I had left were stories from my friends about their newest discoveries and experiences. The dangerous journeys to discovering the next substance in vogue, the secret maneuver to acquiring the said substance without the consent of our guardians, and the ensuing experience and intoxication caused by the substance.
All these only contributed to heightening my curiosity levels and making me felt even more left out.
"Have you tried the new combine"? Kingsley asked me
"No, I haven't" I replied before adding "how is it"?
"Guuuuyy, that stuff is strong and wicked" Uty jumped in before narrating what they had saw with one of the elders who almost stripped himself naked after taking combine.
"Guy, I dey fear to take that thing o (I'm scared of taking that thing)" Kingsley said
"Me I just want try am (I just want to try it)" Uty interrupted
But we did not know how to make the combine and could not possibly ask our elders for help, so we had to wait for a perfect opportunity, and that opportunity finally presented itself in an unexpected way.
After the renovation for our primary school was approved, the contractor was forced to hire us as laborers for the work. On one of the days, the weather was unfavorable and it was raining heavily.
With the weather cold and freezing and all the workers shivering with the cold, our seniors sought solace in the bosom of combine (a combination of cannabis and raw hot drink).
The drink was ordered in sufficient quantity for everyone and we now had the perfect opportunity to fulfill our curiosity towards this infamous drink.
I dived in immediately and threw one full shot down my throat. Immediately I could feel the burning sensation spiraling throughout my whole system. It felt as though a flame had been lit right from the stables of my stomach and all shades of cold began to evaporate.
By the third shot, I was beginning to sweat under the now drizzling rain and felt like a car who's turbo had been overcharged and was about to release steam.
It was as if I had not even started working for the day. I got more than our threshold for the day and had to be restrained by my mason. I quickly got home and went straight into the kitchen and almost finished the food that was kept for three people.
After freshening up, I still felt a surging appetite for more food even when I was conscious of the fact that I'm already too full. I went back again into the kitchen to finish what I had started.
After eating, I went straight to bed around 5pm and only woke up the following day around 1pm to excruciating headache and hunger. I stood up from the bed, but could barely walk as my head was still spinning.
I ended up being high for almost 48hrs after that. And that was the day I decided to get a grip on my curiosity towards intoxicating substances and decided to detach from my friends.
This is a beautiful take on curiosity which many could relate to. The youthful desire to explore the unwholesome, feeling as if some secret happiness lays beyond, is nearly a hallmark of the teenage years. Thankfully you were able to take your lesson from it and move on in a way that benefited you.
It is a shame that this story was not submitted before the deadline, it surely would have been strongly considered for placement. You can see the current timer countdown on the peakd frontend, displayed on a purple bar. This was really a blast to read! I am trying to imagine this combine... Was it made with any sort of heated liquor/alcohol? How was the pot added, like a tea type deal? Hm... powerful stuff indeed from the sounds of it.
Took me back to my own years of teenage exploration. I had a similar bad experience partying, but I kept doing it for many more years anyhow. Good on you for seeing this situation so clearly at such a young age! Thanks for the awesome story, I learned a bit about Nigerian slang and had a few chuckles along the way. 😁
Combine is made of hard liquor and cannabis. The cannabis is soaked in the liquor for days or so, after which the cannabis leaves are filtered out.
It's one of the most powerful local drinks over here and is credited with making some people go mad.
😂😂 You'll still learn more along the way.
I really liked that you added the translation in parenthesis. Although I've probably read 1000 stories at this point with Nigerian slang in them, no one ever explains like that. One of my favorite things here is a continually growing understanding of other cultures... yet, it can be hard to pick up slang! Thank you for the explanation of combine and helping me learn more in general!
