Little Pot of Horrors - this plant eats bugs

I used to have one of these plants when i was in school. I always had fun watching it grow and catch insects. I get a newsletter from the local nursery and noticed they had just received a shipment of carnivorous plants. I decided to go have a peek at them.

Memories flooded back as i looked at what they had to offer so I couldn’t help myself but to buy one of them. I picked out this venus fly trap.

I have had it for a little over a week and it has almost doubled in size already.

The tag that was with it did not provide much information about it care and upkeep. Only that it ate insects. So i looked up stuff about it on the web.

The jaws so to speak look so tender that i did not believe at first that it would be able to capture and hold an insect for very long.

The first day i had it, there was a swarm of flying ants in the back yard so I placed it close to where they were flying about. Later i came back and several of the traps were closed.

A week later, yesterday, the traps opened up and there wer shells of the ants left in the traps. This food may have been why it has doubled in size. I did read to not give it any fertilizer because it would get its nutrients from the insects it ate.

This is a brand new trap that has grown over the past week. It is not yet big enough to open but it should maybe over this next week. I counted over 10 traps on this one plant.

The so called soil is a moss that must always stay wet because this plant is native to a bog. I have never been around a bog and it also needs high humidity. I will need to figure out what’s works best for it.

It will be a big learning experience. As I remember now, my venus fly trap i had when young only lasted about a month before it died. Probably because I didn’t take proper care of it. I hope this one lasts a lot longer than that.

Wishing you success on growing your exotic plant. I know I'd like to try growing a plant like this too. 🤔 I do wonder where I could buy one. 😆 I know I'd be waiting for updates from you. Happy new week (and new month) ahead!
