You can buy packs in the upcoming mini-set for 350 SPS, 4000 DEC, or $4. That makes SPS the cheapest option right now as it's trading around $.0065. You also earn Glint ( a token used to buy cards, skins, potions, etc..) by having SPS staked. The more you have staked, the more GLINT you earn for winning battles. You also get SPS rewards for staking it. It's roughly around 7.5-8%. So, no, it's not pure speculation. While not strictly necessary to play the game, the more you have, the better. If it eventually goes up in value, great. If not, it still has utility to all players in the game.

Like I said, though, in this case, I'll be buying packs in the new mini-set in another month or so, so getting an extra 500 SPS translates into an extra pack and a half. Pull a Blackfoil card with that pack and it could be worth $1000 or more. Chances are slim, obviously, but there are lots of assets in the game worth hundreds of dollars so....each pack matters.
