An attack of leafcutter ants!

This capture is a mix of admiration and anger! What you're seeing here, my noble friends, is a colony of leafcutter ants! That's what we call them here in Brazil. They have this name because... surprise... they cut plants, and then transport the leaves and stems to their nest, where they store and produce their food.

In this case, I witnessed an attack that will cause significant damage to a native tree here at my workplace. The number of ants working simultaneously is frightening! I also recorded a video, but Liketu doesn't allow it. In close-up, I'm showing several ants working on cutting the leaves. Then a sequence of small leaves on the sidewalk: they are being transported to the nest!

The last photo is a snapshot of the exact moment I managed to record one of the ants breaking the stem of the leaf, which would then fall to the ground, making a slight noise. This noise was constant, as the tree was cleaned by the ant colony. I don't know if such a large tree will survive with the few leaves that remain.

I hate these ants because there's a colony of them in my house, and I've been fighting them for a long time. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose the battles. The last thing they destroyed was my Tahiti lime tree. They've also affected my olive and mango trees in the past. It's a shame, because it delays the development of my plants. But they are an admirable force of nature, that's for sure!

Essa captura é um misto de admiração e raiva! O que estão vendo aqui, meus nobres amigos, é uma colônia de formigas cortadeiras! É assim que chamaos aqui no Brasil. Elas tem esse nome porque .. supresa... elas cortam plantas, e depois transportam as folhas e caulaes para seu ninho, de onde vão estocar e produzir seu alimento.

Neste caso eu presenciei um ataque que vai causar um dano significativa em uma árvore nativa aqui do meu trabalho. A quantidade de formigas trabalhando em simultâneo é assustadora! Gravei um vídeo também, mas o liketu não permite. Em close estou mostrando várias formigas trabalhando no corte das folhas. Depois uma sequência de pequenas folhas sobre a calçada: elas estão sendo transportadas par ao ninho!

A última foto é um snapshot do momento exato em que consegui gravar em vídeo uma das formigas rompendo o caule da folha, que então viria a cair ao chão, fazendo um leve barulho. Esse barulho era constante, pois a arvore foi limpa pela colônia de formigas. Não sei se uma árvore tão grande irá sobreviver com as poucas folhas que restaram.

Eu odeio essas formigas pois na minha casa existe uma colônia delas, contra as quais tenho lutado a muito tempo. As vezes ganho, as vezes perco as batalhas. A última destruição foi da minha planta frutífera Limão Thaiti. Elas também já afetaram minha Oliveira e Mangueira, no passado. Uma pena, pois atrasa o desenvolvimento das minhas plantas. Mas que são uma força adminirável da natureza, isso com certeza são!
