Politics and Money
In Nigeria, politics and money go hand in hand. If there is no money, no politics, and no money but support, then politics exists.
Most people who dive into politics tend to have saved or invested a lot before coming out as political aspirants.
Not to be joked with, Nigeria is a blessed country with so many resources that could make individuals rich. Crude oil is one thing that keeps Nigeria running, but so many other resources are there to make this country better than we all hoped for.
For a politician to secure power, there must be something to influence the masses. This shows that Nigerian politics is primarily run or won by those with the most influential power of money. Money always has its way out when it comes to politics. This means I can only come out victorious when I have the money to buy people and to buy the influence of those who have the power to make me one.
For politics in Nigeria, there are formats that have been the talk of the day. Among them are:
godfathers
Godfathers in Nigeria is another great thing that so many old folks are focused on. Nigerians believed that if they were not attached to someone who had great influence, they would not be able to make it through politically.
It's another way or means of making money through influence. Whenever you go to them, they will use your head to claim the whole hell out of you. The sole reason for granting you support is just to gain political favor, either for you as their right man to be paying homage (a handsome amount monthly) or for you as their candidate to place them in a special position or to give them contracts when needed.
Godfathers have their way out in Nigeria, and this majorly does not suit the system or cannot bring about growth to the economy but can bring about setbacks to the country's economy. Just one man would sit on top of the money and would never want to leave, even when on the verge of dying. In old age, Nigerians still want to be a godfather who would stand in to siphon heavily from their boys or men.
When their right-hand man finally accelerated to the position, they would become a puppet whom they could control.
Pumping money during voting
Money must be spent. This is how it is being tagged. When you want to run for any position in Nigeria, you must pump out money just to gain the interest of the masses. Even your words do not matter to them; instead, money matters most.
In a real sense, only the wealthy or well-known can participate in political positions in Nigeria. When you have no money and nobody to back you up or support you, I guess you are nobody. The political race needed a campaign, and to get this done, they needed a substantial amount of money just to buy the masses. When you are ready to campaign with the influential, then you should be a well-known being or one with a godfather.
Corruption
Corruption is the other of the day in Nigeria today, and so many politicians just want to siphon the national cake all for themselves. They are just serving as a figurehead but have something else in mind. Gaining a political seat is all through corrupt practices, and so an ordinary person who is corruption-free has nothing to offer as no one would want to be his follower.
Politicians only used their wealth to bribe or buy votes, as well as to gain power.
Effects on the country
The Nigerian economy can never balance, except if corrupt minds leave the seats.
The influence of money in our country today can be traced to the politicians’ part. They are not ready to make the economy smile, but they are ready to make their pockets smile.
Another one that needs to be considered is the aspect of trust. Since politicians have corrupt minds, no one would be able to trust them, which in turn would worsen the downfall of the naira when compared to other currencies.
The needs of the people are not met. The masses are suffering while the politicians are smiling in their abodes. Nigerians are not smiling today, as hardship has overshadowed every aspect of their lives.
