A Jewel in Potsdam’s Charlottenstraße

I love escaping the loud and turbulent energy of Berlin for a few hours, taking the train to the calmer, more dignified Potsdam. Here, strolling through the streets feels like walking through history itself. Art and culture are present everywhere, and the eyes are constantly rewarded with something beautiful, fascinating, or unexpected.

One such example is this remarkable building on the corner of Charlottenstraße and Kleine Gasse. Today, it houses the Commerzbank, but its history reaches much further back.

The structure was built between 1737 and 1739 as the Kommandantenhaus (Commandant’s House), designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, the favorite architect of Frederick the Great. It originally belonged to the ensemble of the royal stables. In its architectural language, you can clearly feel the transition from Baroque to early Classicism: the strict symmetry, monumental arcades, and richly decorated rooftop figures give the building an almost palatial presence.

What makes it especially striking is the sculptural decoration along the attic, a series of allegorical statues that create a distinctive silhouette. These figures reflect the artistic craftsmanship of 18th-century Potsdam and were meant to underline the building’s function as a place of military authority and representation. Over time, the house served not only as the residence of the city’s commandants but also as an officers’ casino. Today, it stands in the service of banking – a reminder that history and modern utility often intertwine. At least in this way, the building remains preserved and maintained.

This house is a silent witness to Potsdam’s long history, and a reminder of how closely power, the military, and architectural display were woven together in Prussian times. Anyone walking by should take a moment to study the details of the façade – they tell stories that go far deeper than a casual glance might reveal.

And yet, for me, this place carries a personal undertone. Potsdam is one of those cities I would have loved to explore with you – but it seems it will still take a few more years until that chance finally comes.

Ein Schmuckstück in der Potsdamer Charlottenstraße

Ich liebe es, dem lauten und turbulenten Berlin für ein paar Stunden zu entfliehen und in das deutlich gediegenere, ruhigere Potsdam zu fahren. Hier kann man durch die Straßen schlendern und auf Schritt und Tritt Geschichte erleben. Kunst und Kultur sind allgegenwärtig, und die Augen finden immer etwas Schönes, Interessantes, manchmal auch Unerwartetes.

Ein solches Beispiel ist dieses eindrucksvolle Gebäude an der Ecke Charlottenstraße / Kleine Gasse. Heute ist es von der Commerzbank besetzt, doch seine Geschichte reicht weit zurück.

Errichtet wurde das Gebäude zwischen 1737 und 1739 als Kommandantenhaus nach den Plänen von Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, dem Lieblingsarchitekten Friedrichs des Großen. Es gehört zum Ensemble des ehemaligen königlichen Marstalls. In seiner Gestaltung ist der Übergang vom Barock zum Frühklassizismus deutlich zu spüren: Strenge Gliederung, monumentale Rundbogenarkaden und reich verzierte Figuren auf dem Dach verleihen dem Bau eine feierliche, fast palastartige Wirkung.

Besonders eindrucksvoll ist der Figurenschmuck auf der Attika, der dem Haus seine unverwechselbare Silhouette verleiht. Die Skulpturen zeigen allegorische Figuren und zeugen von der künstlerischen Handschrift der Potsdamer Baukunst im 18. Jahrhundert. Einst diente das Kommandantenhaus als Residenz der Stadtkommandanten, später auch als Offizierscasino. Heute beherbergt es eine Bank, die sich – wie so oft – in die historischen Mauern eingemietet hat. Ein kleiner Trost ist immerhin, dass der Bau so erhalten und gepflegt wird.

Und doch hat dieser Ort für mich eine ganz persönliche Bedeutung. Potsdam ist eine der Städte, die ich gerne mit dir erkundet hätte – aber es scheint, als würde es noch ein paar Jahre dauern, bis sich diese Gelegenheit endlich ergibt.
