DIY Baby/Toddler Leggings from Scratch

avatar

Hello #Needleworker

Ever wanted to sew something from scratch but felt it might be too complicated? Trust me, #diy baby or toddler leggings are a perfect beginner project. They’re quick, simple, and super satisfying to make. If you’ve got some stretchy fabric lying around, you’re halfway there already.

Today I’m showing how I turned a black knit fabric into a comfy leggings for my little one using an old pink leggings as my “pattern.”

✂️ What I Used

  • Stretchy knit fabric (about half a yard)
  • An already made leggings (for tracing)
  • Elastic for waistband

Using an old pink leggings, folded in half along the side seam. Placed it on my folded black fabric and traced around, adding about 1" for seam allowance and 2–3" extra at the top for the waistband casing.

Once traced, I cut out the first leg piece, then used it to cut the second one. I ended up with two mirror-image pieces.

🧵 Sewing

  1. Fold each leg piece right sides together and sew along the curved crotch seam.
  2. Turn one leg right side out, then slide it inside the other leg (still inside out).
  3. Match up the crotch seams and sew the inseam in one go.

Now they actually start to look like pants!

Waistband Casing

  1. Folded 2" at the top down and stitch around, leaving a 1" gap to insert the elastic.
  2. Measure elastic to your child’s waist, thread it through, and join the ends.
  3. Sew the gap closed.

Hemming the Legs

Fold each leg opening in by about 1" and sew.

This leggings were made from black knit fabrics, it is stretchy and #handmade with #love. You don’t need a fancy pattern to make cute baby clothes, sometimes, an old pair and some fabric is all it takes.

Happy #sewing

Greetings @chatsunny, the leggings, just as you mentioned, are easy to sew. Since they don't have side seams, the process is simpler. The girl looks pretty and happy with her outfit.
