Just like human being relationship, spending time in prayer strengthens your connection with God, it helps you to know him more.
The bible teaches us that faith without work is dead, this applies to prayer, praying without taking action is insufficient.

Be willing to obey God's command and follow his calling, demonstration your faith through action.
Focus your prayers on aligning with God's good, pleasing and perfect will, not just your own desire.
So brethren if you really want to get closer to God prayer is not the only way, there are many principal way to get closer to him, obey him, study the word, be good to men, be patient, have faith in him and also accept him as your lord and personal saviour.
