God's ways of marriage is always between one man and one woman, described as one flesh in the book of Genesis.
In the bible Abraham and Solomon was polygamist, but it does not mean that God is in approve of it.
God is against church leaders and kings from having multiple wives, setting a standard for moral and spiritual example.
The negative aspect and consequences of being a polygamist, such as jealousy, division, and also in Solomon case driving him into idolatry.
Having a multiple wives is a sign of sin, work of the flesh, discontent, lust and greed.

God allowed polygamy in the old testament but did not approve it.
In my own opinion the reason why God allowed polygamy then was because in those days it was impossible for a woman to provide for herself, most women were uneducated and untrained.
Women rely on their husbands, brothers and father's for protection and to provide for them, while unmarried women were subjected to slavery or prostitution.
So God might have allow polygamy to provide protection and provision for the women.

One man will marry many wives and serve as the protector and the provider for them, because living in a polygamist home is better than being a prostitute or a slave.
God's intention for human is for a man to get married to only one woman, not many wives, in that case a woman will live his mother and father and unit with the Man and they will become one flesh.
Polygamy was never God's intention for us, God allowed polygamy to solve a problem.
In today's society there is no need for polygamy, because 80% of women can provide and protect themselves.
So God never approved polygamy but he allowed it.
