Hi dear friend, let's take the first-order ordinary linear differential equation below as an example.
Y identifies an unknown function, the ratio dx/dy indicates how y varies as x varies and is essentially a derivative, P(x) and Q(x) are two terms that identify known functions in x. I'm not sure I've clarified your doubts; perhaps I should write an article about the use of letters in mathematics.
