What happens to advertising when intelligence becomes cheap?

Discussing something so close to talking about regular business practices isn't exactly my forte but I wanted to regardless because, well, it helps me explore the unintended effects of AI.

You see something many times over and your brain starts to recognize it without much focus.

There's a reason companies spend billions on ads, the businesses fighting over ad spaces for your attention aren't stupid, the volume game usually will turn a profit.

Yes, sometimes it isn't that your product or service isn't valuable, it's just that your pockets weren't deep enough.

But I'm not here to talk about money, I'm here to discuss the ads themselves.

The effects of seeing something many times, so much that your brain starts to easily recognize it isn't always positive.

Especially for the businesses.

Sometimes, that easy recognition trains the brain to react negatively to it.

You visit a website and immediately there's a pop-up, you're almost certain it's either an ad or a cookie consent block and you hate it and don't want to read it, so you immediately click away.

Bad bad bad.

Cheap intelligence, well, capabilities actually

You can easily create an ad design today with AI.

You don't need to pay a graphics designer or an ad team.

Just jump into ChatGPT and start chatting.

Doing a lot of things is cheaper now. It's almost insane.

But the problem is, well, the market is already bored and will probably skip your ad.

And if your ad isn't performing well, you'll stop paying for ad spaces and well, the platforms and distribution companies start losing revenue.

Well, I just talked about money again.

But let's drive a point home.

You've probably heard this one before but cheap intelligence isn't a substitute for creativity.

To be creative and to create something the market will value is to observe and execute on your discoveries.

I've consumed an unhealthy amount of videos on design concepts and creative media edits and I'll tell you one thing, the world is at a point where the best ad is based on some form of trickery.

They call it the hook and you'll generally find that the whole media direction prioritizes simplicity.

This means that even though ChatGPT can make you an ad in 5 minutes, that cheap capabilities isn't going to buy the market, the simple things are what's appreciated at this time.

And the intelligence we have needs creative directions to produce anything that would deliver exceptional conversion on that front.

This goes to prove once again that cheap intelligence isn't an equalizer, but a multiplier. The creative human mind still matters and the intelligence of machines won't direct the entire concepts, it will only aid production of certain pieces.

The bottom line is, the creatives will still win, with the cheap intelligence in their bags of course.
