Visa is building a secure payment infrastructure for AI agents with OpenAI

In a major step toward automated digital economies, payment giant Visa Inc. and artificial intelligence (AI) pioneer OpenAI on Wednesday announced a strategic partnership to bring secure payment infrastructure to agentic commerce.

The collaboration, unveiled at the annual Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco, aims to establish a trusted framework for payments initiated by AI agents across OpenAI platforms.

As AI evolves from passive assistance to active execution, AI agents are increasingly tasked with completing financial transactions on behalf of users. Through this alliance, Visa will integrate its global network, advanced tokenization, and risk-management capabilities directly into OpenAI’s ecosystem. This infrastructure will allow developers and merchants to seamlessly accept secure, agent-driven payments.

AI taking over payments

To be honest, AI is taking over everything, from the execution layer.

If something can be done faster and cheaper, an AI will exist for it. This is the inevitable future we're building towards.

When it comes to finance, AI agents will take over much of the execution of value flows.

Business payments will be handled by AI agents. End consumer purchases likewise.

This brings the business ecosystem to a point of peak efficiency.

Speed becomes central to value flow and most markets trend towards being fast-paced, thanks to AI.

One thing that I believe isn't often priced is how this essentially translates to a major shift on what a "target market" would represent in a business world of the future.

In today's market, a target market could be United States adults aged 24-36, male and female, but when AI agents are in the picture, at the heart of execution, the change of what sits at the center completely changes what a target market is and effectively how to optimize for it.

In most cases, this will mean that businesses will be selling to agents, not humans as the first point of contact.

What marketing efforts will be optimized for will be selling the concept of something being "worth it" to AI agents.

If agents cannot determine the value of a good or service, there's a high chance that monetary value flows elsewhere.
