People don't realize just how important “context” is to AI

Every time someone says AI is shit, I imagine they are equally shit.

Believe it or not, AI is a mirror. If there are limitations to your understanding or knowledge of a topic, those gaps will be reflected in your interactions with generative AI.

I think it is interesting how people will scream at the top of their voices that AI steals creative human content and knowledge, and then go ahead to call what that same AI generates trash.

Are we effectively saying that the stolen content or knowledge was trash?

Because if AI is reproducing human creations, then its outputs should be priced closely to the value of the training data.

Of course, we can argue that pricing differs when dealing with an original and an imitation, but this argument wouldn't hold weight across all creative fields.

Maybe in art, yes, but in writing? A great hook will always be valued. Great marketing copy will always attract conversions. It doesn't matter where the copy came from; it's how it is applied that matters.

Context will increase output value

Telling an AI to explain “What is machine learning?” to you will produce a very different response from asking it to, “Explain machine learning to me as someone who couldn't explain how a computer works at a basic level.”

The first question is generic and doesn't give the AI much insight to work with. The response will rely on what is common in its training data.

Now, this is where the real gist is.

Generative AI is largely a prediction machine.

When you ask it a question, it generates a response based on what it has learned from its training data, predicting each word based on patterns it has gathered during training.

So, when you ask it a vague question, it will give you generic responses because its training data is all it has to rely on. Within that dataset, your question is generally expected to be answered simply.

But when you give AI “context,” you introduce it to new information. Now, it has to do more than throw back generic responses based on what it learned during training.

It has to interpret your query more deeply, and the response can become more personalized. Giving AI context expands the information it has to work with when generating a response.

This is why highly knowledgeable people can get more out of AI when leveraging or applying its capabilities to their careers than random people on the internet who are simply trying to explore a new topic.

Those people may not know what to ask or how to ask it. As a result, they may struggle to turn question-and-answer sessions into problem-solving conversations.

Your cognitive limitations can be reflected in how you use generative AI, and the best results will often come from providing more relevant data (context) when using the technology.
