A work of art woven with fique🧶✨

Today, I took a break from my Christmas knitting to tell you that a few days ago I visited the National Museum of Colombia and one of the rooms, I came across an exhibition that completely captured my attention: the works of the VIII BAT Salon of Popular Art. Among them, one work in particular stopped me in my tracks and left me deeply impressed.
It was a sculpture crocheted with natural fique fiber, a beautiful piece entitled “Weaving the threads of my life again” by artist Karina Berdugo. I researched this work further and read that it won the 2020 Portafolio de Estímulos Award and the 2022 Legado del Arte Award. I really liked the fact that a work made from weaving, with such symbolic significance, received the recognition it deserves and is appreciated as a living part of our art and culture.

Hoy, le puse pausa a mis tejidos navideños para contarles que hace unos días visité el Museo Nacional de Colombia y en una de las salas me encontré con una exposición que capturó por completo mi atención: las obras del VIII Salón BAT de Arte Popular. Entre todas, una obra en particular me detuvo y me dejó profundamente impresionada.
Se trataba de una escultura tejida en crochet con fibra natural de fique, una hermosa pieza titulada “Tejiendo otra vez los hilos de mi vida” de la artista karina Berdugo. Estuve indagando más sobre esta obra y leí que fue ganadora del Premio Portafolio de Estímulos 2020 y del Premio Legado del Arte 2022. Me gustó mucho sentir que una obra hecha desde el tejido, con tanta carga simbólica, reciba el lugar que merece y sea apreciada como parte viva de nuestro arte y nuestra cultura.

As a knitter, encountering this work moved me deeply. I felt an immediate connection because it reflects what we do when we knit. It's not just about joining threads or creating shapes; it's a profound act where life is intertwined stitch by stitch.
Each piece of work contains something of who we are, what we have experienced, and what we feel at that moment. This work awakened all my sensitivity because it reminded me that, when we knit, we are also healing, remembering, and building. I left the museum with a full heart, grateful for this encounter that confirmed, once again, that knitting is living memory made thread.

Como tejedora, encontrarme con esta obra me emocionó mucho. Sentí una conexión inmediata porque refleja lo que hacemos cuando tejemos. No se trata solo de unir hilos o crear formas, es un acto profundo donde la vida se va entrelazando puntada a puntada.
En cada trabajo queda algo de lo que somos, de lo que hemos vivido y de lo que sentimos en ese momento. Esta obra despertó toda mi sensibilidad porque me recordó que, al tejer, también vamos sanando, recordando y construyendo. Salí del museo con el corazón lleno, agradecida por ese encuentro que me confirmó, una vez más, que el tejido es memoria viva hecha hilo.
