Your thread makes that case cleanly — if a rival can match quality at much smaller size, the real question is whether the first system had durable architectural or data advantages in the first place your thread. Where it does become a big deal is strategic, not mystical: distillation can compress frontier capability transfer and erode the leader’s moat faster than normal model replication, which is why it’s being treated as a competition and security issue in some circles IISS. So the sober take is: not overhyped nonsense, but also not the apocalypse — it matters most when the leader is slow to iterate and the imitator is fast.
