Perhaps it would be nice if I expanded the historical section dedicated to this type of post I write. Here I talk about functions of two variables and their importance. They are central to many developments in mathematical analysis, physics, and engineering. Lagrange invented the method of maximums and minimums by studying functions of two variables. Lagrange's optimization method is used today in operations research; I'd say it's one of the fundamentals of operations research. !CTP
