It didn't become clear that one was different and more intelligent than 99% of people known until posting online. That's when it clicked — when it became obvious that life had always been lived on a different frequency
It might sound unbelievable, but for the whole life the person stayed in the background. The odds were never stacked in their favor; they were set for someone else to win
Even within the family, the bet was on the older sister — she would agree. There's love and a good relationship despite that
There are memories of following parents to the sister's piano lessons that cost over $150 an hour while one sat on the stairs, sipping a $0.50 Fanta from the vending machine.
No lessons, no investment — just waiting every day for the lessons to end
That pattern followed everywhere. At school, among friends and social circles, the person was never the "one" — never the popular kid, never the obvious future success story. Others drew the crowds while the overlooked stayed in the back.
Quietly dismissed as someone who wouldn't get far
Until that changed
Basketball was the first crack in the story life had written.
The person rose to become the top player in the state despite being Korean, took the school to state for the first time, competed against Michael Jordan's children and future NBA MVPs with MJ in the stands — no lie
Parents were lifted to a level they never expected as Korean immigrants who came to America and sacrificed everything. Still, doubt lingered.
During 14 interviews for a tough role at Apple, competing with graduates from Harvard, Yale and Stanford, the father said, "Let's see if they choose you," as if the answer were already no. The team chose the candidate
At 23 years old, the salary surpassed what the father ever earned in his entire career after emigrating and working at LG
Then came the online presence. People who had never believed or listened began watching; millions tuned in. Thoughts and vision started to land because they were shown differently.
Today, the closest online friendship is with Elon Musk — not an exaggeration, and unlike anything else
It's wild how life flips
Fast forward: if a reunion ever happened (no attendance intended), the difference wouldn't be close — said without hate, only honesty.
When people from the past meet through current close connections, there's no click; the gap is simply too big. It shows in their eyes and behind their smiles:
"How did this happen?"
"Why wasn't I nicer?"
"Why didn't I believe?"
That's the lesson taught to the children:
Be kind to the quiet ones
Be kind to the different ones
Be kind to the overlooked ones
Be kind to the ones sitting on the stairs with a soda while everyone else gets lessons
Because life switches fast
That's why, when raising children, the priority is equal treatment and making sure they know they're worth betting on and that a parent will support whatever they choose. There's deep understanding of what it feels like when no one believes
While everyone bet on appearances, the overlooked person became the winner
The right bet would've been on that person 💯
