Under Low Clouds

Kaş feels different from most Mediterranean resorts. White houses cascade down the steep hillsides to the sea. From almost anywhere, you can look out over the bay, the surrounding mountains, and the forest of masts filling the marina. What I remember most, though, is the sight of heavy rain clouds hanging low over the landscape, giving the town a mood that felt both intimate and quietly dramatic.

Kaş has a history stretching back more than two thousand years to the ancient Lycian city of Antiphellos. An ancient theater, Lycian rock tombs, and other monuments still stand as reminders of its rich past. Today, Kaş is known as one of Turkey's most peaceful seaside towns — a place people come not for loud nightlife, but for the sea, for diving, for sailing, and for its unhurried pace of life.
