I doubt I’ll ever get tired of sharing photos of volcanic landscapes. I remember that, as a child, volcanoes were one of my biggest geographical obsessions — and volcanic islands most of all. Perhaps that’s why Tenerife became my first trip abroad. Madeira followed later — an island I’ve been irresistibly drawn back to ever since.
Some of Madeira’s most impressive landscapes, in my opinion, can be found at São Lourenço, on the eastern tip of the island. It feels worlds apart from the rest of this lush, green island: huge cliffs plunging into the ocean, endless expanses of barren land, and hardly any vegetation at all — in short, the feeling of being somewhere truly wild and primordial.
And yet, it’s precisely this harshness that leaves such a lasting impression.
So if you’re heading to Madeira, make sure to carve out some time for São Lourenço. In my view, without this rugged, almost otherworldly corner, your experience of the island wouldn’t be complete.
