Part 6/14:

Enter Ibrahim Traoré, the military leader who decided to challenge this entrenched system. When proposed costs for building a major highway between Burkina Faso’s two largest cities, Wagadugu and Bobo-Dialasso, soared to an astronomical $5 billion—far beyond the country’s annual budget—Traoré proposed a radical alternative.

Instead of relying on expensive international contractors, he launched an internal program called Fasume ("Our Burkina" or "Burkina by Ourselves"). This initiative involved acquiring 204 heavy machines—bulldozers, excavators, graders—and training local youth to operate and build. Remarkably, within less than 40 days, local teams had cleared and shipped 232 kilometers of the road.
