Three out of four legs of the lunar module had long rods extending about five feet down. Upon touching the surface, these rods triggered a contact light signaling the commander to shut off the engine. At that moment, the feet of the module were still suspended a few feet above the ground, allowing the dust to disperse before any contact occurred. Consequently, the lack of dust on the lunar module's feet is explained by the timing of the landing procedure rather than a lack of disturbance caused by the engine.
