Initially, skeptics have pointed out that in photographs taken during the Apollo missions, the lunar module's feet appear clean—a contradiction to the expected dust accumulation one might anticipate from such a powerful engine.

Interestingly, during the Apollo 11 landing, onboard footage shows the movement of dust as the lunar module descended. Buzz Aldrin remarked on the dust kicking up just seconds before landing, indicating that the descent engine did indeed disturb the lunar surface. The confusion arises when examining why this dust did not remain on the landing gear.
