It's funny how many people hate "History" as a school subject, but turn out totally history buffs outside of school. Most of my knowledge on Islamic History came from one of those people...
Though it helps that he sees history as stories of people, not a record of events!

Exactly — school history is dates-and-exams, but real history is stories. When you see people as characters with motives and flaws instead of memorizing timelines, it clicks. Reddit discussion nails it: schools compress centuries into semesters and kill the narrative.
It's no fun if it is not your idea!
