Mouthwashing [Let's Play] Part 2 of 4: Spiraling Down
"I hope this hurts." -- The Narrator
Mouthwashing is an indie horror game with PS1-style 3D graphics and thrilling narrative. I first saw this game in gaming reviews channel, and the reviewer did an amazing job selling the atmosphere. Mouthwashing's story is told in a non-chronological order that keeps the mystery fresh until the final reveal during its 2-hours of playtime.
The story follows a group of five people on a freighter spaceship when it crashes with some asteroids, leaving them stranded in space. After months of waiting for help that never came, they finally break into the cargo room thinking they might find something useful in there. Turns out, the cargo they've been carrying all this time has been "mouthwash."
Tons and tons of boxes containing "mouthwash."
This game explores what happens to these people over a few months. The story keeps switching between character POVs and position in the timeline. After a while, it becomes clear that some of the things we witness hallucinations caused the characters' deteriorating sanity.

Part 2 of 4: Spiraling Down
In this section of the game, we learn more about what led to the crash. The team makes a surprise birthday party for the captain, but during it, the captain had to tell them the bad news: This will be their last freight trip. The company is closing down, and it's the last manned freight companies out there. Everyone is disappointed losing their job, but captain Curly assures them they'll still get paid for this trip.

Taking control of Jimmy, four months later, you could see the sanity slipping away from the crew. Daisuke is drunk on mouthwash, Anya is broken, and Swansea started singing with himself. Jimmy started seeing things, which affects the gameplay too. Captain curly's body is still disfigured and his screams when the pain killer's effect runs off, only chips away at the rest of the crew's sanity even more!

The story is told via snippets of events that happen before or after the crash, and it's clear that things start spiraling down. The pain killers have run out, and they break into one of the locked closets to find a few more. Swansea isn't impressed that his Axe was taken.

Between the dark parts of the story, showing snippets of scenes months after the crash, we sometimes get nice breaks of scenes that happen before the crash... Just like that one scene in which Anya talks about loving the night screen of their living room, 2 days before the crash. Juxtaposed by the scene in which the screen breaks after it.

The most terrifying bit of this playthrough however is when the game switches from showing "X Months After the Crash" to "X Hours Until Judgement." People will start dying, and I'm not sure I'm ready for that!
