Digimon Survive [Let's Play] - 01 - The Shrine
Digimon Survive is a Digimon Visual Novel with Turn-based strategy battles. The game follows a group of children who find themselves in another world, and their desperate attempts to find a way back home. The children find themselves involved with monsters, both as partners and enemies.

This is the darkest piece of Digimon media I ever consumed, and Cybersleuth had pretty dark stuff too. Digimon Survive fuses the concept of Digital Monsters with Japanese folklore. It's amazing how the idea of "child sacrifice" integrates seamlessly with Digimon lore. The specific Digimon they choose for this game enhance this theme.
Digimon Survive is the closest modern entry to the old school Digimon anime vibes. Though, more than the earlier Digimon anime series, the game reminds me more of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor series. In that series too, characters may die depending on your actions.

THIS PLAYTHROUGH IS MODDED: I installed the Improved Translation Mod and the Quirky Dialogue Font Mod. This playthrough should look a bit different from the official version.

01 - The Shrine
In this session, we see a girl and a boy who are running from monsters, while being protected by smaller monsters. The girl tries to protect her brother and the monsters, but some light absorbs them.

The first playable segment, we play as Takuma and get to know all the characterts. His friends, Minoru and Aoi, and the other children at the camp like Ryo and Saki. With the older boy Shuuji being responsible for their group.

After a while, Ryo and Saki disappear. We meet with Kaito who's looking for his sister and we search for the three.

The search takes us to the shrine, and we see a field of Spider Lillies... That's the moment I knew we're in for a special dark time.

On point, the implications of this topic are huge
I remember following the development of this before it came out, I had my sights set on playing it. But when it finally came out, I don't know why I never played it xd. I was really drawn to its tactical turn-based style, although from what I can see in the video, the visual novel aspect is also very present, I thought it would be more of a secondary feature
To me it felt as if the writers took the original anime series, "Digimon Adventures" and asked "How can we write this in a realistic way for mature audience?" It still feels like Digimon, it's still has follows PG13 guidelines, but it's very dark!
By the way, this game is 70% Visual Novel and 30% Tactics game... The story battles aren't that frequent, but if you enjoy the battles, you can have as much Free Battles as you want during the Free Time segments.

STOPMan I was hyped for this game because I'm a big fan of both Devil Survivor and Digimon, but something always bothers me about Digimon games, they feel kind of all over the place in terms of mechanics, I'd finish a Digimon game and never fully utilize its system the same way I do with Pokemon and Shin Megami Tensei games, compared to Devil Survivor for example, a challenging game that really pushes you to experiment with its battle system in a deep level (making skill combinations and fusing powerful demons), Digimon Survive felt lacking, it's more basic and doesn't push you hard enough. To be fair I haven't finished the game yet, and I liked it a lot all things considered.
What do you think? Maybe I'm being too harsh?
Well... Digimon Survive gameplay is really basic, and the story feels slow a lot of times. But I will still recommend it to Digimon fans. I haven't finished it yet, but there's a Twist in Chapter 7 I didn't expect so you might want to play until then if you still have the unfinished save.
Oh so you are this far ahead into the game, or have you finished it already? I may actually get back to it soon, I don't remember where I stopped, it was over a year ago.
I just reached Ch.8 today.
