The Heart of the Unknown
We always have a meeting on the first Sunday of every month at 5 pm. I was not ready to attend the meeting due to something I had to take care of. Meanwhile, some days after the meeting, we had a government palliative we were supposed to share to those who would be present that very day.
The palliative was a heavy one which no one would dare miss, and I was not ready to miss it since it's going to be a mouth watering one.
When it was that very day, I was back from service and had to relax a bit before going to the meeting. I was waiting for 4:30 pm before leaving since the meeting would be 5pm. I had to relax a bit just to keep the time moving. As I was sleeping, I was watching my wall clock so as not to be late for the meeting that wants to bring in some good news. I knew that a meeting like this can always be filled up to its brim unlike before. Before now, most of our members always drop their contributions without planning to attend the meeting. I could remember clearly that I had done that before. This time, no one would want to stay at home without attending.

I took my umbrella because the weather is not reliable. It was just a portable umbrella that was given to my husband from work. I checked the time again and it was 4:30pm. This showed that I will not be late for the meeting. The weather was so clear and was not cloudy. There was no proof that the rain was going to pour out its last drop on the earth. It was sunny but then I did not trust the weather anyway
It was like a twenty minute journey to the venue. On my way, there was a sudden cloud change. I was not bothered as I was with an umbrella. A few minutes later, it began to blow out a heavy cool breeze. The breeze was the type that can carry any object if not human beings. After some while, it began to rain. I turned on my umbrella and was in motion before this whirled breeze took off my umbrella. I was angry and decided to hide my head at the front of a very fine building. I do not know the owner. I stood there for more than twenty minutes and it was still raining cats and dogs. I was cold and began to shiver.
I checked my phone, it was exactly 5pm. This showed that I was late already and the distance to the venue was like 10 minutes.
Where I was standing, the door was opened and I was unsettled. My thought was that the owner had sent someone to send me out of his or her frontage. A young lady showed up saying her madam said I should come in. Even while standing, my legs were drained. At some point, I was not ready to go in just because of fear. I decided to bounce in but with fear that took over my face. The young lady noticed and said I should not be afraid. I entered and her madam was seated right in the parlor. She asked me to relax and feel at home.
After a while, the rain was not ready to subside, so she asked her maid to prepare a hot tea for me. I was shocked to hear that, but also with fear. I wanted to say "there was no need”, but something in me took the decision to accept.
This young maid served me tea, bread and fried eggs. I was still in a deep fear but again had to accept my date. The woman said “don't be afraid”, as if she had read my mind. I sat in the dining room and sipped my tea while cutting the bread and eggs gradually. I was not in a rush.
While eating, she was also eating hers. She asked me where I was from. I told her and we started chatting. I told her where I was going to and the reason for the urgent meeting. She smiled and looked at me deeply, according to my observations. I'm always quick to observe people.
We both discussed a lot as she told me her story and how she made it in life. Just every moment was a joyful moment to me.
I took my phone and called the chairman, his phone had been switched off but finally it went through when the rain subsided. He said the meeting did not hold any longer just because of the rain. I was so happy after hearing this. I told the woman and she smiled.
A few minutes later, I stood up and told her, I want to take my leave. She brought out her phone and took my phone number. She called my phone just for me to have hers.
Ever since that day, our friendship has been just like two sisters. I pay her visit most of the time when I'm free. I got to know that there are so many people out there who are caring, unlike my little perspective about the rich people.
She was giving my kids clothes every three months and sometimes crediting my account with a tangible amount of money.
The detour has made me see the good part of people.
Most of the best people we have in our lives are strangers.
Carrying an umbrella around during this rainy season brings one some level of confidence 😂, even when the weather squeezes, you keep going.
