Taking Health First

Tax on a normal ground is a compulsory levy imposed on the citizens (business owners, organizations, etc.) to fund public services. Public schools, hospitals, roads, and other social amenities are funded or built with the revenue from taxes.

We have healthy tax and unhealthy tax. When we say a unhealthy tax, we mean those taxes levied on goods that are healthy for the community or society at large. Most goods are just too good to be in a country. Goods like food items (consumable goods), clothing, building materials, and other items that are seen as good and healthy.

Taxes on those healthy goods are meant to be lower than the unhealthy goods.

The healthy tax is the tax levied on goods that are considered unhealthy. The unhealthy goods are goods like cigarettes (tobacco), gin, drugs, and the like. Taxes on those items are to be levied so high just because of the situation and the way they are.

In the company where cigarettes are made, they always made it clear, and it is even boldly written on the back of the package that “tobacco is dangerous to health.” This alone can be a major reason to increase its tax, as cigarettes are considered an unhealthy item. So, an healthy tax should be imposed on it.

Really, “smokers are liable to die young”; it's also the language that's written on the cigarette packs. When you smoke too much, it can cause long-term failure and can even cause liver disease.

Another area we should consider when talking about healthy taxes is the area of pollutants. There are so many areas we need to consider when talking about healthy taxes.

In my street, the road is tarred, but the rate at which vehicles always drive along that tiny road is alarming. Most of the time, the dust that they carry is not friendly. This is what we call air pollution. This can cause so many kinds of diseases in the body. To curb this unwanted and reckless driving, a healthy tax needs to be imposed on vehicles. Apart from the dust, their exhausts are also something else. The rate at which they bring out smoke is not the best.

Heavy industries that produce harmful chemicals. All these should have a high rate of taxes, as they stand a chance of harming the environment.

A friend of my husband, although he has cut him off just because of his behavior, is an alcoholic. He can drink to the last extent. This alone has made him become drawn to alcohol. Anytime he is not having enough with him, he will behave calmly, just like water. During this period, he will vow not to get closer to alcohol, but immediately he's been paid his salary, his morale will be high, making him get drunk.

Not just him alone, but others always get drunk daily. The rate at which people drink alcohol nowadays is just too alarming. This is why alcohol is called an unhealthy drink. So, a healthy tax should be imposed on any alcoholic company.

We must live in a safe environment when this is done on those items that I can call unhealthy items.
