Double Betrayal

I saw what is called betraying that it was so painful recently. I could not believe my eyes after being betrayed by the one I called my friend. She is not my best friend anyway, but just a distant friend and a good customer.

My landlord gave us a quit notice three months ago, and I had this mind of searching for an apartment. Apartment that would rhyme with my taste. I have searched round my domain just because I don't want to go too far from the area I'm now. My children's school is not far from where we are living right now. I have tried so hard, as well as my husband, but all our efforts to get an apartment is a a fiasco. My landlord, who we had thought to be a nice person, now turned out to be a tyrant and a betrayal. My husband and I have been so nice to him and his family, but changing overnight just because of increase in house rent as well as the agent and agreement fees was what kept me in a state of serious confusion.

The more I tried to figure it out, the more blank in thoughts I become.

I saw an apartment very close to my house. I was so excited. Not only that, but I walked to the compound just to ask if the price and other things I need to know. The woman is an old nurse who seemed literate. She began to ask me series of questions, just as if I am writing exams. Those questions are not the types one must ask.

She asked finally, “what is your husband doing for a living?” I first looked at her keenly before answering her. “He's a teacher”.
“That's fine. I love giving my house to a teacher”. Hearing this statement gave me some relief.
“Is her a public school teacher or private school teacher?” Her questions were becoming annoying to me.
“My husband is a private school teacher”, she shouted immediately she heard private school teacher, “I can never give my house to a private school teacher. Even the one living in one of my person's apartment is not doing well. He's not paying his bills and that my person has given him and his neighbor quit notice”. Hearing this alone triggered my anger.
After finding out, I later discovered that my landlord has spoiled me and my husband as well as my neighbor to her, whereas, he had been praising me in my presence to be his favorite tenant. I can't seem to understand this betrayal in the form of human. He praises us when we are with him, but destroyed us outside. He would say things that we did not do to people around. This alone is a total betrayal.

After liaising with people and my customers, I got positive feedback from one of them who happened to be my distant friend and a customer. She told me that she had one apartment under her care. Hearing this gave me rest of mind, and I was relentless on finding another one. Meanwhile, the person in that one is yet to pack out.

I kept hoping, and she kept increasing my hope. A few weeks later, the occupant packed out. I was so ready to be the next tenant. I asked my husband to gather some money for the tenant rent. The amount she called for me did not include agreement and agent fees, as she was the agent involved. Two days after the occupant has packed out, I saw her, and she said she was waiting for order from the owner.

My husband saw another apartment, but just because of this very one, I did not agree to it.

After two weeks, I saw a van filled up with loads driving towards that direction. I was not ready to suspect that it was that same apartment. My distant friend and customer began to deviate from me just because of what I did not know.
My husband said “I'm sure the apartment has been rented out”. I was not ready to believe until I had to go to the compound just to see to things myself. Getting there, the truth was widely opened.

I went to her house but met her absence. Maybe, she was dodging me. The several times I went to her house, I always met her absence.

One fateful day, I was coming from market, and we coincidentally met. She was shocked to see me. She had nothing to say any more as she had betrayed me greatly. She began to apologize for her mistakes. Whereas she had collected agent fees from the new tenant. It strongly suggested that she did not give me the apartment just because of the agent fees.

The heart of some people are not just it. With what she had done to me, I can never trust her.
